Jamie the Pagan and myself will be doing another podcast this weekend. It's going to be a lot of off the cuff bullshit, not just training so throw in some questions you'd like for us to answer or take the piss from.
We will do our best to make this entertaining, which probably means we will fail miserably.
you both train with philosophies that are similar in some ways, but awfully different in others - you definitely use lower volume, lower frequency, and seem to take more care over recovery/not always killing yourself in the gym. whereas jamie to my knowledge tries to kill himself in the gym at least 3 days a week!
ReplyDeleteWhich way you believe would be most effective to reach an "acceptable" level of strength, as i guess many of the guys in here including myself haven't got. The level im talking about is something like 300/400/500 bench squat dl. Hard work and consistency is obviously a must, but what about programming and frequency?
ReplyDeleteThis is a boring question but its the only one I've had this week, answer here if you want instead of the podcast. Good/Bad girl machines, I know you do those sometimes which is why I'm asking you.
ReplyDeleteThe other day when I was doing those, the strongest guy at my gym asked me why I was doing those. He said they are horrible and that I should never do them because it can cause injury. Your thoughts on that?
Gain strength while losing fat, is this possible? What conditions need to be present for this to occur? What are your thoughts on this?
ReplyDeleteTraining twice a day, kind of like Chad Waterbury suggests, for the non-professional lifter. Good? Bad? Benefits? How to addapt nutrition and recovery strategies for it?
ReplyDeleteAnd Paul, any idea on when the new shirts will be availeable?
Thanks, man.
Something I've been thinking about lately that you guys might comment on: How to go about brining up one lift/area, while coasting on others, but not letting those others drop off TOO much.
ReplyDeleteWith something like 531, it's sort of built in how to do that, but I wonder if you guys have any rules of thumb that you use.
Do you go ass to mouth?
ReplyDeletethe differences in each of your philosophies when it comes to conditioning
ReplyDeleteThoughts on olympic weightlifting and would you do it if you could go back to the time when you first started training.
ReplyDeleteI posted a training Q at Jamie's blog cause the guy basically lives and breathes weightlifting. You seem more like the womanizer type (haha): how do you convince a woman to pick up weightlifting or at the very least drag (delicious) ass to gym? And how the hell do you get her on a diet she will actually fucking follow as laid out (by Christ I find this impossible)?
ReplyDelete1 more, thoughts on taking a pre-workout supplement or what you guys do/take to "get up" before a workout.
ReplyDeleteDynamic effort for raw lifters, waste of time?
ReplyDeleteKonstantin Konstantinovs, Stan Efferding, Benedikt Magnusson, Andy Bolton, and Ed Coan all get into a fight - who wins and why?
ReplyDeleteProbably KK, since he works as a Bodyguard and probably knows how to fight.
DeleteStan Efferding. He has as much money as Bruce Wayne, so he probably has some kind of high tech Rhino-themed gadget he could use to defeat them.
Deleteworking as a bodyguard does not necessarily mean a person can fight.
DeleteWhat do you guys think of Crossfit?
ReplyDeleteKeep em coming. All good questions........
ReplyDeleteHow do you guys recover/train following lower back injuries. I know you've been over other types of injuries but specifically lower back?
ReplyDeleteAlso, Paul, what's your thoughts on Jamie's predator Diet? Also thoughts on metabolic typing which Jamie is a fan of.
Wt did you do to cure you shoulders/pecs troubles you always talk about, so you could get in the 400s bench range again
ReplyDeletecare to give a good rehab routine for the shoulders, point some tips etc...
is a problem so common(wihc im also dealing with), so i think ill be intereesting if you dedicate a small article to it.
You both seem to be nerds at heart, what comics would you recommend? For what its worth my top three are Preacher, 100 Bullets, Transmetropolitan
ReplyDeleteThoughts on Arachidonic acid?
ReplyDeleteDo you feel your strength training over the years has helped you in any fights or bar room brawls you may have gotten into over the years?
ReplyDeleteAlso what are your favorite exercises for strengthening your tris?
Jamie is very big on doing partials, but that sounds almost like what you hate about weak point training. Can you guys speak about your thoughts on partials in training.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
D.
More questions, if not for tomorrow then for another time...
ReplyDeletePaul: What other martial arts have you done, apart from ninjutsu, and what is your favorite out of all of them? Which do you regard as "the best" for you and why? Also, elaborate on how you would combine weight training with martial arts; many old fashioned martial artists are against training with weights. Do you regard this as correct, partially correct, or just a bunch of old fogies who are stuck in a past that never existed?
Jamie: What got you into East Asian Studies? Elaborate a bit on what you studied for your degree.
Questions for both of you: Name the most useless piece of shit training ideas you ever used, and why you consider them useless pieces of shit. This has probably been asked before, but it bears repeating.
Favorite politician, most hated politician, and politician you most love to hate. Yeah, this is going to be weird.
What character class would you play in a D&D game? And if you found yourself transported to Hyborea, what "class" would you yourself be there, if different?
And because I'm going full nerd, and someone already mentioned comics: how 'bout that weird anime stuff from Japan? Any favorites, or not a fan?
That's about it. Looking forward to tomorrow. Cheers!
Maru
how would an older trainee (e.g mid-late40s) who still wants to get stronger/bigger train? DC recommends no low-rep sets etc. what would you recommend? thanks.
ReplyDeletege
eating/diet on a budget eg students, guys with families, etc.?
ReplyDeleteSo when is this podcast happening and where can we down load it?
ReplyDeleteIt's on hold. I got a text from Jamie yesterday reading "I need to sober up. Give me a minute."
DeleteIt may happen tonight. We'll see.
Is that you Cory?
Paul, I'd be interested to hear you push Jamie regarding his position on overtraining. Some of his rhetoric, if taken literally would indicate that he thinks overtraining is practically a myth and that lifters would be well served by training balls out, every day. However, if you look at what he does, and what he recommends, it's clear that he is actually taking (albeit unconventional) steps to prevent overtraining, or what I would think of as overtraining anyway.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you think Nathan......
