Deadlifts -

Deadlifts -

135 x 10
225 x 3
315 x 3
405 x 3

500 x 1
550 x 1
605 x 1
635 x 1 - Tore bicep

Well there goes that.  Got 635 with some to spare but right at lockout the right bicep popped and I knew right away what it was.  I tore the left one years ago so I've been through this before.  Obviously I won't be doing the August Pro-Am but shit happens and you move on.  At least I did it on a PR.

  1. Are there ways to prevent bicep tears? Or is it something that comes with the sport?

Like would you have done anything different to prevent this?

  2. You can change to a hook grip. Brad Gillingham did this after several bicep tears. Anytime you use a mixed grip once you get heavy enough there is a risk of a bicep tear.

Only thing I could have done different is not pulled 635.

  3. Sorry to hear about that, Paul. How you heal that up (time, surgery)?

  4. Yeah surgery. I already have an orthopedic that did the left one. So I know what the deal is. I'm looking at around a 2 month recovery period. They say longer but last time in 2 months I was back to 100%. Getting the full ROM back took about a year. In other words, where it felt like the elbow would totally lock out.

  5. Sorry for the dumb question, but how would you define "heavy enough?" As in what weight would you switch over to a hook grip in order to avoid a bicep tear?

I'd really like to avoid that.

  6. Good luck Paul! Can you still bench? squat?

What are the pros and cons with a hookgrip?

I tried it once, hurt like shit. I'm looking into it, because I have a major strength deficit between left and right, because of my torn rotatorcuffs, and I would think a hookgrip makes things more symmetrical..

  8. Heavy enough will be different for everyone. You could do it with 405 if the tendons aren't ready for that load. Or it could be 700. Everyone will be different.

Can't bench, will be able to squat like the fugitive (with 1 arm) after surgery.

    Thanks Justin.

  13. Hey Paul I love the blog and am sorry to hear about your injury, but do you think that using straps above 500 or so would be a good idea to avoid a tear? I figure that if you train grip strength as well, you wouldn't lose any of the benefits of deadlifting without straps but I wanted to hear what you thought.
I wish you a speedy recovery

  14. I think that the biggest issue was the long time pain in my elbow that had caused some weakness in my forearm and grip. More than likely what happened is that I bent that arm just enough at lockout to cause the tear to happen. Yes straps would have caused it not to happen and I have contemplated not using straps after I am healed up from this tear, but I'm not sure yet.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my recovery.
