Training at the Strength Guild with Phil Stevens

Went out to Topeka to train with uber sexy Phil Stevens and his awesome group of peeps at the Strength Guild.

We had a little contest of deadlift repping with 500.  I got 12, just failed on 13.  Sam got 13 and Phil got 15, with a couple left in the tank.

I went first so Sam and Phil can suck my nuts.  LOL

More importantly, Hannah got 10 reps with 135 on her deadlift.  Super proud of her and her progress.  That's 5 months of training at 13 years old and a buck-05.  She's going to have a pretty sweet little deadlift if she sticks with it.

I had a great time, and it was great meeting everyone there.  I plan on being Phil's period, and will return once a month.  Next time I will stay longer for Sushi.

  1. You said before that if you've got a bodypart that sucks monkey nuts that you know how to bring it up. I've found that my grip is a huge weakness. It is first thing to give out on all my puling exercises. I'm buying the book when it comes out, but if you have any tips now I'd be super grateful!

    1. Grip is not a bodypart.

Timed heavy db holds are the best "grip" work I know really. But since you're holding a DB, might as well do some rows or shrugs with em. So think about that and work those in.

  2. Paul, you're strong and all, but the video of your skinny little daughter gritting her teeth and bangin out 10 reps on the dead is just awesome. Tell her to keep up the good work.

  3. First off, love the podcast with you and Jaime.

Second, I commend you for not letting your daughter become the stereotypical bullshit that I see out on the streets everyday and for setting a good example for her.

Third, where do I submit questions for the next podcasr?

  4. 1: Who were you guys inspired by to get into lifting

2: How do feel about the current scene in powerlifting

3: What do you feel is the biggest bunch of BS out there in regards to making progress in building size and strength

  7. 1. Could either you or Jamie take Kimbo slice in a street fight?

    2. Do you think chicks in general prefer the Brad Pitt "Fight Club" physique to a bigger dude like Vin Diesel or the Roc?

    3. How many dudes could you take down in a street fight at once? Assume they are average dudes (180lb) with no special combat training.

  8. Gotta love that toilet just sitting out in the middle of the gym.

Your daughter's gonna be stronger than a lot of high school boys!

*Going* to be? High school boys must be stronger where you live.

  9. I dont know who Sam is but if you can get him to go 1st next time I back you to beat him. That Phil guy must be a beast.

It must make you feel pretty damn good seeing your daughter throwing herself into something youre really into. I have a question regarding set up. Her stance is really narrow. A lot of girls seem to use a sumo stance and youre going the complete opposite of that. Any reason for that?

    1. I think had Sam gone first he doesn't get 13, and I do. It's funny how that works in the arena of competitiveness.

Yeah, I don't like sumo and I think that conventional is a better overall power builder because the whole point of the deadlift is to show back strength. Sumo is really about hip and glute. And I use squats to take care of that.

  10. Looking and lifting like a beast PC. Great work on getting your daughter into it too. BTW watched the clip of Phil deadlifting - almost a stiff legged deadlift, that is one insanely strong back he's got.

  11. That was badass, your daughter showed more heart grinding out those last few reps than 90% of guys who "lift" at my college.

  12. That Deadlift was awesome. And even better, you let each rep "reset" instead of bouncing it off of the floor, like many people do!!

    1. That's how I always do them. But the rules for the deadlift rep challenge was that each rep be reset.

  13. Hey Paul whats the best way to get a youngin started in the iron game? I got my brother a gym membership for his 15th birthday. Will it be sweet to let him jump in on my Squat bench dead and press days and start him light and build up or something different?

    Thanks

    1. I started Hannah out on squats, incline, cable rows, and chins for the most part. If you listen to Chaos and Bang 2 I explain why I chose those and what I did with her.

But again, this is a whole chapter in the new book.

  14. Excellent pulling Paul! Enjoyed the competitive deadlift videos quite a bit. Phil and I may know a few of the same people since I'm pretty sure I've heard his name before. With his Highlander comps it's no surprise since I know a bunch of the USAWA guys and gals.
