Hitting the erectors with hyperextensions properly - Video

This topic has come up a few times, and I wanted to address how to do hypers properly to work the erectors at the exclusion of the hamstrings.

Enjoy.

  1. Good demonstration Paul, I'll definitely try them this way next time in the gym.

  2. Thanks for the video. Never thought to do hypers like that. Also great Spider-Man pic. Who painted that on your body?

  3. Thanks for this.

I assumed everything except the ROM. I thought you means come all the way back up, but this cleared that up nicely

  4. Could these possibly be done with stiff legs or good mornings? My gym doesn't have a hyper bench.

    1. It can but I don't think it would be quite as effective.

  5. I learned that if you want to work your erectors, put your belly button on the edge of the pad so that you bend/round at the waist/spine and not at the hips. You describe the difference between the two movements well in the video.

    1. I've tried it that way Ryan, but it felt awful to me.

  6. Paul, would you consider these a good injury prevention drill? I've had some lower back strains around the SI joint and I'm looking for something to stay ahead of and prevent them in the future. Thanks

  7. Hey Paul,

Last week I snapped something up in my lower back by pulling too much without a proper warmup, couldn't bend over for like two days. I've heard hypers can be restorative. Have you ever fucked up your lower back like that and would you recommend trying to keep the area nice and lubed up with hypers?

    1. I don't recommend lubing anything that has the word erect in it, in the gym.

I do recommend you go see a doctor.
