Thoughts about life, crap, training, and stuff....

Glad I got that 725 rack pull out of the way.  Now on to pull 750, and 800.  I don't rest on my laurels long because I already start focusing on a new goal.  Why would I?  I pulled it.  It's done.  I celebrated the work I put in to get that for about 3 minutes, and then I realized what a pussy I was for not being able to pull that easily from the floor, and set my mind on 750.

Obviously my strongman deadlift cycle is working.  I missed 725 the last time from that same height with straps.  Again, the only time I use straps is at the fancy gym, where chalk is a no no.  I don't mind using straps sometimes, because as you can see, grip is not an issue.  But I had wondered how 725 would feel in my hands coming off the pins.  No problems.

The book is pretty much finished.  I need to get pictures for a bunch of stuff, and I need to refine lots of chapters but for the most part, it's done.  Expect it out in maybe 4 weeks or so.

No Chaos and Bang podcast this week.  Jamie is out.  So we'll have one for next weekend.

Carb up last night was 4 slices of pizza, 20 cookies, and a bowl of ice cream.

Bodyweight hasn't really moved.  Still about 245-248 pounds give or a take a Snickers.  My guess is whatever is going to happen with this diet is going to take some time, not 6-10 weeks.  Most of the people I read that were on it, saw results after a significant period of time.  Not like two months.  And I'm good with that.

So my other cat, Biscuits, he comes around a ton now.  Ever since Tully died (my 23 year old cat) he's been real social.  Before, I barely saw him.  He just hung out in the basement.  Now he comes upstairs all the time, hanging the fuck out, acting like shits been cool for years.  Cats are weird man.

Don't have a ton to write because I'm fucking tired as shit, and had a fairly lazy weekend.  I hope all of you did something nice for mom on mothers day.

One of you bitches ask me what my diet looks like now..........

    1. I do as well, but someone scorned me last night that "it wasn't 3 minutes after you set that weight down that you were unhappy with it...."

  2. MAN, I can't wait until the book is out!

I think a good way to get out-of-shape people interested in powerlifting is to show them what their diet could be like when they start hitting the iron. Steaks and burgers took up a large portion of my diet last week and I still lost a pound by the end of it.

  3. Haha, right on. I can relate, after a big lift I'm almost immediately dissatisfied or feel like it's not enough...who knows, maybe it's just part of human nature. Anyway, def look forward to the book as well.

  4. Are you going to have someone edit or otherwise look over the book for you? I've worked with a lot of writers over the years, and it usually seems helpful for them to have someone(s) that they trust look things over to help insure that what's in their mind is what's on the page.

  5. Hi Paul,

If you had to bet on the 3 or 5 men who are most likely able to perform to all of the standards you and Jim Wendler laid out in the "What Constitutes Strong?" article, who would you pick?

  6. I just started following this site. It's great to see a big strong dude down with cats. Fuck the "cats are for pussies" crowd.

    1. I never understood this. Cats are independent, kill shit, and fight when they fuck. How is not alpha?

  8. My cat had a similar experience. When my old guy Vladimir kicked, it was like this weight lifted and my other guy Rasputin started hanging out all the time. I think it was just the fact that Vlad was such a dominant personality it made the other cat lay low. It seems in the animal world there are no fuzzy edges when it comes to being the Alpha. Unless you're on top, you're eating last.

    1. He is def most social now. Comes out in the morning, wants to play with the dog and hang out. Just kinda weird. But I'm sure with Tull gone now he needs new ways to pass his time.

  9. Paul congrats on the PR. Keep working hard and that PR dead will come. Also, I am glad to see my rusty trombone question had such an impact lol.

I figure that seeing as you are into Krav Maga you would have a good handle on getting your training done around the fight training.

I am taking Judo Monday-Thursday and classes are 1.5-2 hrs long. Right now I am trying to get 2 days per week in the gym but they are pretty damn long sessions that look like this:
    1. Squats, Bench, Chins/Dips, Curls/abs/neck
    2. DL, press, pendlay rows/dips, curls/abs/neck
Low reps on the first two big movements, the rest are done higher reps and supersets.

Right now Judo is my conditioning but I was thinking about adding in sprints a couple times per week as I adapt and Judo takes less out of me.

How do you think I should structure my strength/conditioning around Judo? Would your 2 big 2 small idea fit in well or would I be best keeping the lifting to 2 days per week? Thanks in advance.

    1. i'd personally go......

      Day 1 -
      press - 5,4,3,2,1, 1x8-15 + 50%
      pull - if a chin go 5,4,3,2,1 1xmax with body, if it's a row go 5x12
support work or a secondary press

      Day 2 -
      squat or deadlift - 5,4,3,2,1,1,1
lunges or 1 legged squats - tons
      abs - tons

1-2 smalls - biceps, triceps, calves, cuff

Remember, the Judo work comes first, so in and out of the gym fast with an emphasis on moving weight fast and explosive.

  11. Hey Paul you ever notice any carryover from your deadlift to other movements?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not understanding the question.......I think picking heavy shit up off the floor would carryover, from a strength perspective, in just about everything.

  12. Hi Paul I'm 16 and am a skinny dude at around 103 pounds - 5'8". So for now I'm planning to work out and such to get lean. If I had to really chose a person I'd want my body to look like, it would have to be someone such as Zyzz. I unno, its just something cool to see a bony fuck turning into a piece of art.

I've been working out about 3-4 times a week for about a month now and I do not see much of a change. Perhaps its my diet.
Been doing some pushups after reading a little "Convict Conditioning"...

    What should I do?

    1. You're 103 pounds and your plan is to get lean?

      Seek help little son.

Second, do NOT train for looks. Train for function. Train to be the baddest mother fucker you can be. Eat to be the baddest mother fucker you can be. When you do these things, you become the baddest mother fucker you can be, and you'll look like a bad mother fucker.
