Thoughts about life, crap, training, and stuff

About a month left until I fly into Columbus, Ohio.  Been looking forward to this trip for some time and I expect many good stories to come of it.

We will be doing Chaos and Bang Your Earballs TOMORROW NIGHT!  Jamie has his stuff squared away since the meet and we're ready to rock n roll.  I already have the questions all lined up and ready to go.

My leg, amazingly, had no pain after Saturday's squat session.  Yes, it was only enough weight for a adolescent midget female to struggle with, however just being pain free the day after squatting was nice.  Hopefully that continues for a while.

Apparently, I need to get my wisdom teeth taken out now.  I still have all 4 and they came through straight for the most part, but they are starting to now ache a bit and every once in a while they cut into my gums.  So they gotta come out.  I'm sooooo looking forward to this.  That's heavy sarcasm by the way.  I've heard so many horror stories about getting wisdom teeth pulled, and having my mouth filled with gauze for a few days doesn't sound too enticing.  Anyone that has a story to share about it, go right ahead.

For any of you in Australia, Phil and I already have hits for two seminars there.  If you are in Melbourne and are interested please let George Mariolis know.  If you are in or near Sydney contact Amir Fazeli to let him know you are interested.  If it's in two places we would prefer to just make a longer stay on the one trip, and schedule it all together.  I promise Phil and I will bring our A game with us.  Phil will be going over all the Olympic lifting stuff and I will be doing all of the power and assistance work stuff.

Speaking of Phil, books are being printed as we speak and as soon as they arrive on my doorstep, I will have a post about it.  I will also start getting them shipped that day.  So just be patient with me guys.  The new Lion shirts are also ordered.  Those things are going to be fucking bad ass!

I'm still hitting up guys like Rollins and others for a podcast sit in.  Trust me guys, it will happen.  I'm like a fucking pit bull on a turkey leg.  I won't let it go.

I had a poll on my Facebook to see what band is actually worse than Nickelback, and it turns out there is one!  It's Insane Clown Posse.  I thought that was a pretty solid pick by everyone.

And speaking of solid pics, this was in my mail this morning.......

That is my very good friend Rachel Guy and she's also helping with getting things going on the Australian seminar.  She also is not hard on the eyeballs.

I have yet to see the new Batman movie, but it's 3 hours long and that's kind of a movie commitment.  As soon as I get the chance I'm going to get out to go see it.  No gunman jokes needed.

I hope your Monday sucked, as mine DID NOT.  So there.  What now?

  1. Saw Batman last night and thought it was epic. Wish I had Bane's voice (not the Vader affect, the eccentricity of it).

  2. I had my wisdon teeth taken out a few years ago. The dentist removed de left ones first, so I could use the right side of mouth. I didn´t have problems with bleeding, so no Gauze filled mouth for me. First couple days, I ate a lot of ice-cream, to help with the swelling/pain. Hot stuff wasn´t good, so "just warm soups" will do fine in the beginning. After 2 or 3 days, no one could noticed anything, I could chew some soft stuff and talk normally. After completely healed, I went to remove the right ones. In both times, I returned to "all out" training, but the weights of that time are something like your warm up, so I'm not sure about lifting... Also, in both times, had no one to take me home or money for cabs, so I walked home, despite all the "don't walk or do anything phisical" speech they gave...

  4. After having the bottom two wisdom teeth pulled, my dad had to drive me to my college so I could finish my last term paper before graduation. He had to almost carry me up to the computer lab, hold me steady, and sometimes help type my thoughts. Here I am with gauze all in my mouth, drooling on the keyboard, trying to graduate. I made a D+....who would have thought.

Most important, you may need a water pik to clean out the holes once the pain subsides. I ate a Sub about a week after surgery, and started noticed my breath was rank. Days went by, and my mouth smelled like a cat's butthole. I finally got a toothpick and messed around back near the incisions, and I pulled out old, rotten sub. Food had gotten lodged in there and basically started rotting. It was nasty. So, make sure to gargle a lot. Good luck, enjoy the drugs, and mail me whatever you have left..... :D

I hope Toby Keith is playing in the dentist office during your procedure

    2. Raw Unity will not be in Texas again this year, it's back in Tampa Fl. The Texas turnout sucked as well as the meet site.

  10. I saw Batman. I did something I haven't done in nearly 4 years. I got stoned and went to see a movie by myself.

    So:

    1. The fucking commercials and previews and setup for the movie are so fucking long that I wasn't high by the time the movie started getting even remotely good. Booo.

    2. I must be the only person on Earth who doesn't really care for these Nolan/Bales batman movies. I didn't like the Avengers either.

    3. Bane is pretty fucking cool.

    4. The thinly veiled false duality presented of either a well ordered crime free city dependent on the threat of a state sanctioned extrajudicial ass-kicking (why do you think they have the bat signal?). Versus French-Revolution-level chaotic class war was so unbelievably annoying that I punched the guy next to me and took his wallet for the greater good. Fuck this movie's politics.

    5. No, seriously, Bane is fucking cool. I could watch him kick Batman's ass all day every day and twice on Sunday.

    6. I still didn't like the movie that much.

    7. But Bane was cool.

  13. You should have Dan John for the podcast. He's a really nice guy.

    1. I think Dan John is really smart and nice, but I'm not sure he'd fit in on the podcast with talk of porn, shit eating, zombies, and the like going on.

    2. Yeah, forgot about that... You are probably right.

  14. Paul,

I have ordered your book and I also have practical programming, starting strength and 5/3/1 apart from the fact I like reading and testing out different peoples ideas I am also building an information base for my son so when(hopefully) he starts lifting he can do everything right from the start and not waste time like I did, what other books out there would you recommend?

Also in the book do you go over training children since I saw you mentioned on a blog entry you were training your daughter?

    Thanks,
    O

    1. I think it's important to remember not to over inundate with too much information. What you have will suffice.

I don't think kids should start lifting until around 13 or so.

  15. Had my wisdom teeth out about 6 years ago. Did it a rugged/stupid way, though. Didn't go under general anesthetic, just localized injections. Problem was the numbing wore off very fast during the procedure and I just gutted it out. Felt them breaking my wisdom teeth apart with an "ice pick" type of tool. If that wasn't enough agony, the stitches broke later on in the night when I was sleeping and I somehow ended up sleeping face down. Also I had some fucked up reaction to something and experienced 'sleep paralysis' for the first time in my life. So I woke up face down suffocating in a pool of my own blood and not able to move. Suffice to say I panicked like I was being buried alive and was finally able to move after what seemed like an eternity. Possibly the worst 24 hours in my life.

Just know your experience couldn't possibly be as bad as mine. You'll be fine. Remember, don't be a bitch.

  17. Paul- I had my wisdom teeth in my 30s and I was dreading it. My experience was great- no pain whatsoever. I didn't even take the pain killers the Dr gave me. They put you out and you don't even realize what's happening. I think the real problem is when the teeth don't come in straight or when they're impacted. I think those people are the ones with the horror stories. If yours came in OK, you should be good. Good luck!

    1. Well that makes me feel better.

    2. That's exactly correct.
My bottom two: Impacted. Experience: Worst pain I've experienced. Seriously considered cutting off my head at one point to alleviate it.
My top two: Not impacted. Pulled out by Army dentist while shooting the breeze about baseball. Felt nothing.

  18. Got my four teeth out when I was 22ish. Two were impacted, so there was swelling because of it. Here's a brief synopsis:

-Don't get a general anesthetic, being awake and high as fuck on legal drugs is awesome when they are drilling out teeth (seriously).
-Ice cream does help, but I really think it can increase the chance of infection, and you probably won't want to fuck up your diet. I just drank a ton of ICE-COLD water (which helps the healing process as well).
-Brush your teeth and stitches at least 4 times a day, and after you eat. The waterpik isn't a bad idea either, except that it might inject waterborne bacteria under the stitches.
-Stay away from the serious painkillers; I had a leftside chipmunk-cheek, and ibuprofen was fine. I think the T3's and codeine suppress your immune system anyway.
-No mouthwash; the alcohol will sting and it dries out your mouth, leading to more bacteria growth.

I went in Monday, got drilled and pulled, and when I came back back Thursday for a checkup my swelling had dropped so much that the nurse didn't believe I was there for a post-op.

All in all, I guess I was lucky; I've heard of super healthy people get wicked chipmunk-cheeks and infections, whilst I had a pack-a-day smoker friend who recovered miraculously...

One thing, if you get wicked chipmunk cheeks, you've gotta post a picture...haha.

  19. I had my wisdom teeth pulled about 5 years ago and haven't been to a dentist since, it was terrible. Course I did like one of the above posts and just did local anesthetic cause I had no idea, "how bad can it be?"
Was a pretty unpleasant experience watching a guy with an ice pick in your face and feeling the grinding and popping and cracking as they break teeth apart and wrench them out. Not to mention the assistant sucked with the little vacuum thing and dropped 2 teeth right into the back of my throat, nothing quite so lovely as nearly choking on your own bloody molar.
Finished up and the dentist didn't prescribe me any painkillers, handed me a sample pack of advil.
Only advice I'll give is watch for "dry sockets", when they don't heal right. Got to the point that 3 days later I couldn't even drink water without agonizing pain. Went back to the dentist and he looked in my mouth and and said "oh yes, this is bad" and walked away.. Came back with some weird brown mash looking stuff, didn't explain anything he was doing, and proceeded to cram a wad of it into the gaping hole! Good lord I nearly ripped the arm off the chair while simultaneously crapping myself and peeing just a squirt. Apparently it's some stuff that breaks up all the scabbing and causes you to re-heal, this time properly.. Would have been dandy to know that before hand though..
So any advice I can give is:
1)Don't do local anesthetic unless you enjoy hearing/feeling/seeing chunks of bone cracked and torn from your jaw
2)Get some painkillers for afterwards! even just a few days worth of T3s! (ice pack head diapers are good too)
3)If it doesn't heal properly be prepared to have what amounts to damp steel wool jammed into the open throbbing socket (or maybe that was just some weird East-Indian remedy and I'm an unlucky sap)
On the flip side my wife had them removed under general anesthetic and she healed perfectly with almost no pain in like 4 days. Good luck!!

  20. My wisdom teeth story is decidedly uneventful. I had it done while in college, had my mommy to take care of me. Got put under, slept like a goddamn rock pretty much the entire day, drank shakes for that day and the next, and was back to eating solid food (albeit VERY slowly and gingerly) within a couple days. I had heard about dry sockets, so I was scared shitless about it happening, but I just made sure I kept them washed out and whatever the hell else you're suppose to do and I was fine. Honestly don't even remember if I took any painkillers.

  21. Biggest advice is keep a few freezer bags of frozen peas in the freezer and build yourself a stocking hat with a bit of clever stitching to hold them against your face. Put them on your face as much as you can the first few days. No pain, no swelling, was back at work 4 days after. Also rinse the sockets with a syringe and salt water after every meal.
