Thoughts about life, crap, training, and stuff

So I know everyone is excited about the book, and it's SO close.  My graphics design chic says she made need another day to finish up, so Strength, Life, Legacy won't be ready today for distribution, but it's no more than a day or two away.

In the meantime.......

I've been watching True Blood since Game of Thrones is over, and well, let's just say there is no comparison.  TB is pretty campy and can't be taken serious in any way, shape, or form.  I FEEL like I'm watching a TV show, where with GOTs I feel immersed in what is going on.  However, TB is interesting enough to keep me entertained so I'll finish it out.

So while I was taking some downtime from strep throat, I started plotting out my plans for the next few months, and picked out a meet.

I will be going back to the LRB Template for a little while.  It is, without a doubt my fave/best overall "offseason" template because it covers so many things at once.  Starting August first I will switch over to the new big-15 template with a LOT of perceived intensity work on big movements.  That will continue up until September 15th, when I start training for the UPA meet in November.  I have numbers in mind, but most importantly, I just need to show up.

Even with the release of the book, I'm going to be writing a series based on being a "lifer" and what I feel the code around being a lifer is about.  From a lifting standpoint, to being a man.  If you listened to the podcast or read 5 articles here, you'd know I think we are in a sad state of affairs when it comes to young men.  When you have a cult following for a stripper and do nothing like Zyzz, we have gone wrong somewhere in what we are propping up for young men as what a MAN is.  Wearing make up, doing your hair, hanging out in womens clothes......none of this is manly.  Please save me the liberal mindset that everyone should be able to do what they want to do if they aren't hurting.....blah blah blah.  I agree with that, however my concern here is that there are too many young men that look up to someone like Zyzz, who literally did NOTHING.

If you don't like my opinion pieces about it.....don't read em.  You got the wholllle internets to yourself to avoid me.

So Wandy lost another fight.  My heart sinks for him.  It really does.  But every athlete falls off the cliff at some point, and Wandy fought wars for years and years, and his time as just passed.  I hope he retires soon.

I will be visiting Columbus, Ohio in a few weeks to stay with my buddy Jason Pegg.  I am going to get Pegg on a podcast very soon as he's a god damn hoot and knows a fuck ton about training.  Jason is a very smart technician as well, and is a tremendous resource to anyone who wants to know how to get better.

They are coming out with Taken 2!  Fuck yes.  I loved the first one as a "smart" action flick.  I'm sure this one will be just as good.  Big Liam Neeson fan here.......

Again, it's Monday so I don't have a ton to write.  As soon as the book is ready it will be up.

Just to let you know, Wendler got an early copy of it and he texted me "it's one of the best things I've ever read.  No bullshit."

I am going to have a video up tonight talking about low bar squatting and why so many guys end up with fucked up wrists, elbows, and biceps from it.  It's because they do it wrong, and I will show you how to correct this.

Fuck your Monday!

  1. Fuck Zyzz. Every time I need to get furious, all I have to do is remember that he existed, and that a bunch of self-conscious do-nothing fucks on 4chan and reddit and bodybuilding.com circle jerked to everything he did.

I don't understand how he was inspirational. He wasn't very big and wasn't very strong. He was lean and lived a hard-partying life that made guys envious. He was a pontificating, selfish worm. As for his "inspirational" moments, they were just canned rhetoric that he ripped off from the truly great orators of generations past.

Not to mention that he wore eyeliner and said "brah" more than anyone in the world.

Fuck Zyzz and fuck anyone who looked up to him.

    2. Thanks, I find it easy to write well about things I hate. I actually write professionally. I'm a big fan of the site, and I know you have your own editing process, but let me know if you ever want anything looked over.

    3. I think a lot of kids like him because he started out as a skinny nerd. His transformation was kind of like what you saw advertised on those old-school Charles Atlas ads.

Problem is, he did most of that with drugs, not through training and nutrition........

  2. Slipping my pinky finger under the bar was probably the best thing I have tried for eliminating wrist pain and elbow pain while squatting. Nice little technique I picked up while training at North Georgia Barbell. Just a thought for anyone who wants to try something that may help.

  3. That JPEG would look awesome as a poster on my gym wall, that's all I'm saying.

  4. Hey Paul,

Been reading your blog for a while now. Always great training info and great life lessons too. I'm psyched for this book to release.

I just want to give you a heads-up, in your graphic above, the third line should read "it AFFECTS me not." Hope you can make the change before the book hits "shelves."

Best of luck with everything, brother.

  6. I read your stuff all the time, think it is great.

But seriosly why do you have to say GD, yes i know this is your blog but do you have to take the Lord's name in vain.

As well as you write you can't find something else to say!

  8. Regarding the low-bar, liked the idea of the arms feeling 'weightless' on the bar. Good cue to know if you're doing it right.

  9. Fuck yes, Taken 2! Looks like a really good idea for an action movie. The action hero always slaughters dozens of bad guys, so it makes sense that their remaining cohorts would want revenge. Nice simple way to hang a story on Liam Neeson being a total badass once more.

I like that 'I will become the fucking lion' in the pic. Reminds me of Donny Shankle's 'Pull the bar like you're ripping the head off a goddamn lion'.

  10. If you're concerned that there aren't enough men in the world then how the fuck do you justify watching True Blood? It's a drama about vampires, even my wife thought it was too fucking poncey to watch. Vampires, at least for the last twenty years, are all total gimps that encourage our youths to be feeble and pretentious under the guise that they are being "mysterious". First bring back national service, then bring back ogres, that's what we need.

    1. Because of the hot women getting banged in it? I'm not sure where I tried to "justify" watching it.

If you wanted to be a MAN about that post you woulda said bring back The Wire and The Shield. Boom.

    2. I enjoy watching RuPauls drag race, its fucking TV none of that shit will make or break your manhoo.d

    3. Yeah I don't really place TV shows and shit in the man card category. You're kinda reaching there Blob.

    4. Maybe when you're an adult with a full-time job and a dedicated pass-time it doesn't matter, but most directions on how you're going to live your life are settled when you're a teenager and teenagers typically watch around four hours of television a day. Even with most adults, show them a television program for long enough and watch them agree with the views of people in it, see how their vocabulary, mannerisms, sense of humour changes. There are few TV shows which have any admirable characters, and far far fewer with admirable male characters or even ones a grown man can really relate to. It probably sounds like an overblown response, but I wouldn't award stuff like True Blood with viewing figures.

Yeah actually The Shield was pretty good.

    5. What about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic?

    6. That might be true for some people, but I generally look for people in a show that I can identify with based on my own code. If I can't, I generally lose interest or find trouble staying interesting. If it is not that KIND of show, like True Blood, I watch and laugh. I mean, it's a campy show. I watch it no different than I watch Sanford and Son.

And I agree. There are few very admirable characters in shows now. I have a whole rant as to why I think that is........

  11. Paul,

You should try Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey. It's whiskey for guys who don't like whiskey. Tastes soo good.

-A post about bulling will be good too. How to teach your childs to figth against it.
    Thank's

  13. I never understood how drinking whiskey makes one more of a man. I agree with you that whiskey taste like shit. I can think of better stuff to down.

  14. When you tore your adductor, did you still have pain when doing the adductor machine?

It hurts like hell to squat and has for a few weeks. Because of the location, I thought it was my adductor, but the adductor machine doesn't make it hurt at all. Can also do 150 for a couple sets of 10 on the machine. Deadlifts don't make it hurt, lunges kind of do, speedskater squats do, and going up stairs 2 at a time does.

    1. Not as much as you would think actually.

Use the lunges to rehab that kind after the pain has subsided a little more.

    2. Will do, thank you! Will continue with adductor machine work in the meantime.

you may have said it in the past and if so I apologize, but what price will the book be?

  17. Hey Paul, just wanted to let you know, I read your Raw Squat posts, moved the bar low onto my rear delts, took my grip out a bit wider, kept my head in line as you describe rather than looking up, and I felt strong and fast as hell, and my shoulders and bicep tendonitis aren't barking at me. Thanks!

  19. Did you see the Lillibridge 800x3 squat video? Also one of his comments mentioned for legs he only does extensions/curls/calves as accessory which is good to hear, doesn't get any simpler than that.

    1. Yup. Eric is a good friend of mine and he's still got a lot of strength left he will reach. If he can stay healthy, he'll go down as the best 275 guy of all time with his lifts.

And yeah, he only trains heavy twice a week too. I'm going to write about that soon as well.

    2. Now that´s an awesome idea for the next CnB guest, don´t you think?
Eric is a fucking beast and apparentely a really nice guy.

  20. Missing game of thrones? Read the books... awesome. Or even better, get the audio books from audible.com

Liam Neeson is badass in Taken. I was surprised. But this looks really cool. I saw a really cool interview with him on a British show where he tells that his answering machine message is: "Please leave a message. I will find you. And I will kill you." I love that, in his cool mid-Atlantic accent.
